Summary Info

This white lotus lake located at Bokyongri, Ilroeup, Muangun is a water reservoir built with the effort and sweat of our ancestors during the harsh Japanese rule. It was made by digging in the plain with shovels while most other water reservoirs were made by blocking valleys. Its floor area is about 100,000 pyeong for which two reservoirs were combined as a vein of agricultural water leading to 250ha of farmland. As the estuary dam of Youngsan River provides water for farming, its agricultural function was lost. At that time, there were six families in Dukae Village beside the water reservoir and the residents planted 12 white lotus breeds at the edges of the reservoir. In a dream of one resident that night, 12 cranes descending from the heaven appeared, the cranes looked like white lotus flowers. So the locals have cared for the flowers with all their hearts. The lotus flowers have reproduced and the area has become the largest lotus habitat in Asia. The name of the village is Hoisan meaning energy from all over the world gathers here again. Lotus flowers bloom in muddy waters. The lotus produces pristine flowers with their roots in dirty water. This symbolizes a basic principle of Buddhism
