Summary Info

The Sumjin River originates from Jinangun, Jeonbuk and meets branches from three provinces and 12 counties at Daapmyon, Gwangyang to flow into the South Sea. The original name of the Sumjin River was Moraenae, Dasagang, or Duchigang, and when the Japanese enemy attempted to invade our country via Gwangyang from Hadong, Gyeongnam, hundreds of thousands of toads gathered here and cried, which made the enemy surprised and run away. From this time, the river began to be called Sumjin River with the use of Sum meaning toad in 1385. In addition, Sumjin River was a main route for invasion during the Imjinweran and thousands of Donghak soldiers died bravely in the lower parts of the river. Sumjin River has the clearest water of the five rivers of Korea (Han River, Geum River, Yeongsan River, Sumjin River, and Nakdong River) and its ecological status is good. To the east of the river, it is bordered by the Honam mountains Mt. Mai, Mt. Naejang, Mt. Mudeung, Mt. Saja, Mt. Jogye, and Mt. Baekun and it is proud of its abundant water. Sweetfish, blue crabs, eels, and clams which inhabit here demonstrate that the water is pure.
